This paper presents the design, the prototype implementation and the analysis of the operational data of a decentralized, real time, uniform-price double auction energy market. A distributed and decentralized application specifies, based on a smart contract, the operating rules of the market. Energy market participants interact with the contract sending their asks and offers and the distributed application clears the market based on a double auction model. <br>We propose three different approaches for implementing, through the Ethereum platform, both the P2P network and the smart contract. In these approaches, we gradually move computation from the smart contract to the machines running on the blockchain nodes. We are systematically compare the three approaches on the basis of their decentralization nature, operating costs, computational costs, effectiveness, security, privacy and beyond. Their effectiveness and accuracy are evaluated through comparisons with the results of the same market operated conventionally by a centralized authority. <br>A model representing a physical demonstration project conducted on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, USA is utilized to simulate the power grid and to provide us with the data for our analysis.
