The activated sludge system relies heavily on complex microbial communities, however, the current knowledge of the microbial consortium of activated sludge in South Africa is incomplete and lacking. Microbial communities in wastewater treatment plants possess a colossal diversity of inadequately characterized lineages that may have undescribed functions that are process-critical.
