Its core mission is to provide free and open access to global biodiversity data via the Internet. GBIF has developed common standards such as the Darwin Core and open-source tools, integrating multi-source data from museum specimens, citizen science observations, environmental DNA (eDNA) and other sources, covering distribution and nomenclature information of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms, with a temporal span from the 18th century to the present. The platform's data is widely used in scientific research and conservation decision-making, including mapping species distribution ranges, assessing species extinction risks, monitoring the spread of alien invasive species, addressing climate change impacts and identifying priority conservation areas.
