The Global Biodiversity Information Facility
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international network and data infrastructure funded by governments worldwide, established in 2001 with its secretariat based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Its core mission is to provide free and open access to global biodiversity data via the Internet. GBIF has developed common standards such as the Darwin Core and open-source tools, integrating multi-source data from museum specimens, citizen science observations, environmental DNA (eDNA) and other sources, covering distribution and nomenclature information of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms, with a temporal span from the 18th century to the present. The platform's data is widely used in scientific research and conservation decision-making, including mapping species distribution ranges, assessing species extinction risks, monitoring the spread of alien invasive species, addressing climate change impacts and identifying priority conservation areas.
