POOR QUALITY AUDIO. Shakir Harmes interviewed by Samia Issa. He discusses the following: World War I and military conscription from age 15; exemption from conscription if a man was married to foreign woman or woman from al-Ta‘amra Bedouin tribe; never heard of any rebellion against the Ottomans other than the Great Arab Revolt of 1916; Ottomans took control over political jobs – there were no jobs for Arabs; people suffered from poverty but social relations were good with Christians and Muslims living together as one; locust plague; worsening of the situation in Palestine. Original audio: cassette tape. Transcript: word for word. In the original collection at Bethlehem University this cassette tape was categorised as File 7 of Box 3. This fileset exists as part of the Ottoman Empire and World War I collection within the Bethlehem University Oral History project of the Planet Bethlehem Archive.
