Effects of the 2024 total solar eclipse upon reception of trans-Atlantic signals in the medium-wave broadcast band, using software defined radio files recorded in Lisbon, Portugal.

Recorded by: Carlos Nascimento, CT7AUS. Grid square of location recorded: IM58ht Maximum obscuration of the sun was 0%, as the eclipse ended in the North Atlantic Ocean, west of the recording site. However, unusual signals were noted from North America during the eclipse period. These data files are recordings of the entire medium wave broadcast band (535-1705kHz) made during the total solar eclipse of 8 April 2024 from 1927 to 2056UT from Lisbon, Portugal. They are part of a set of such recordings made from 1554UT on 7 April, 2024 to 2300UT on 9 April 2024. Data Quality: Only limitations are a number of short (<10 seconds) data dropouts and some spurious carriers; broadband noise takes a 10 to 20dB jump around 1835UT 8 April. Data files are .wav format, but the archived files are .zip, with about five .wav files packaged together in each .zip file, using the prefix “CT7AUS-wideband_87_2087kHz_ “. The recordings not included here are available by contacting HamSCI at am-eclipse@hamsci.org, if you require this data. Antenna: fan dipole Receiver: SDRPlay RSPduo l ,RF gain setting 47.2dB, IF AGC disabled, with center frequency 1087kHz, recording a 2000kHz wide passband, using SDRPlay SDRuno. Hardware was locked to a frequency standard, the Bodnar mini-GPS. Recording computer time was set by Dimension 4 to sync the PC time.
