THE CONTRIBUTION OF MAHMUDKHUJA BEHBUDIY TO UZBEK TRANSLATION STUDIES.

This article analyzes the contribution to translation activity made by Mahmudxoʻja Behbudiy, the founder of the Uzbek Jadid movement, an educator, publicist, and publisher of the early twentieth century. Behbudiy is shown not primarily as a literary translator himself, but as an organizer, patron, and promoter of translation: he commissioned and published a Russian translation of Abdurauf Fitrat's "Bayonoti sayyohi hindiy", adapted pedagogical practices encountered among Tatar reformist schools in Kazan and Ufa to the Uzbek context, and provided a theoretical grounding for questions of interethnic communication and language contact in his articles "Til masalasi" and "Ikki emas, toʻrt til lozim". Using historical-comparative and source-critical analysis, the study identifies Behbudiy's practical and ideological contribution to translation studies.
