Vakantielezen (Holiday Reading)

In the Netherlands, the summer reading program 'Vakantielezen' (Holiday Reading) is causing high temperatures… With our poster we show how libraries in the Netherlands are working together to maintain the reading level of young readers during the holidays. Because reading opens a window to the world and together we can contribute to give children equal opportunities. 'Vakantielezen' is an exciting journey for beginning readers (6-8 years). The program is an initiative of Biblionet Groningen and has been offered to libraries throughout the Netherlands through the collaboration with the National Library (KB). It is a unique program aimed at 3 pillars: school - home - library. It starts in primary schools all over the Netherlands. Pupils will read and keep track of where they have been on a map with 6 fantasy countries that match the themes of children’s books: Animal Kingdom, Creepy Coast, Funny Land, Sportsmania, Fairytale Islands and Adventureland. 'Vakantielezen' continues during the summer holidays. Children go on a reading adventure with stories written by wellknown children's book authors. Families can also participate in activities in the libraries. With our poster we show what 'Vakantielezen' is and what impact it has. We hope that our poster inspires colleagues and maybe we can set up an international collaboration in 2024.
