Overview This feature service provides detailed spatial data on watercourses located in Tallahassee and Leon County, Florida, as part of environmental and land management efforts. It serves to represent natural and modified linear water features within the area, supporting environmental protection, planning, and resource management. This layer was originally compiled by staff at Leon County Growth and Environmental Management as part of the Environmentally Sensitive Areas or ESA Project. Since it's initial creation, this layer has been updated by TLCGIS staff as necessary to reflect physical terrain changes using updated LiDAR derived digital elevation models as they are captured. Feature Layer Watercourse: This layer represents various water features including rivers, streams, lakes, swamps, and underground watercourses. The data captures watercourses that flow through different landscapes and entities such as city, county, or private lands. Water features are classified by type and description, differentiating visible and hidden water bodies and conveyances. The layer tracks maintenance responsibility, connectivity status, and quality control edits. It was created using topographic data, lidar-derived elevation models, and other cartographic sources to ensure accuracy and continuity of flow paths. Geographic Coverage The dataset covers the urban and surrounding natural environments of Tallahassee and Leon County in Florida, addressing environmentally sensitive areas within this jurisdiction. Methodology: Watercourses were mapped to conform to the TLCGIS topographic data. The raster digital elevation data and 2-ft contour data was used to control the placement of the linework. Water course features were digitized in a downslope direction. Features were split at impediments and when passing under roads. For connectivity purposes, features were added when watercourses enter lakes and where watercourses pass trough swamps with non-channelized flow. All watercourse features are snapped end-to-end and attributed according to type and description
