This work was done as part of a collaborative effort to characterize the immune system of the Egyptian fruit bat, the reservoir host for Marburg virus. Though Marburg virus has a high case fatality rate in humans and non-human primates, the Egyptian fruit bat hosts the virus without any symptoms. By learning more about this bat's immune system and comparing it to that of symptomatic hosts, we can better understand the host-pathogen interactions involved in the pathogenesis of Marburg virus disease.
