Petroleum microbiology is important to the fossil oil industry and any related environmental research. Extremophile archaea and bacteria are commonly found in those niches. Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA1-Petro strain was isolated from a sample of petroleum production water on the Northeast of Brazil, characterized by high salinity and sulphate concentrations. Although it has attracted attention for its potential as biosurfactant producer, other aspects of its biochemical and ecological properties remained to be assessed.
