The systematic investigation of the chemistry of Fe-C-N system under high pressure will allow to not only produce new compounds and provide insights into their physico-chemical properties, but will also shed light on a possible model for the composition and evolution of the Earth's interior. Here we propose to investigate the Fe-C-N system up to 200 GPa by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) at ID15b beamline in combination with a Synchrotron Mössbauer Source (SMS) study at ID14 beamline. The main objectives of this proposal are to i) synthesize ternary Fe-C-N compounds in laser-heated diamond anvil cells (LHDACs) at conditions close to the Earth's lower mantle and outer core, ii) determine their crystal structure and iron electronic state in-situ by employing synchrotron SCXRD and SMS, iii) establish the produced compounds’ equation of state, find out their stability range.
