These registers contain a summary record of homestead selections in land districts controlled by the Maitland Land Board Office.The homestead selection tenure was introduced in 1895 by the Crown Lands Act of 1895 (58 Vic. No.18). Upon compliance with conditions, a perpetual lease grant could be issued subject to the payment of a half-yearly perpetual rent.The registers record information such as the year and number of the homestead selection, name and address of applicant and transferee, date of receipt of application by land agent, section of act, area, gazette notice, county, parish, and portion number, amount of deposit and survey fee, capital value and rent, date of transmission of extract to District Surveyor and date of receipt of his report, appraised value of improvements, date of confirmation, folio in minute book, dates of issue of instructions to inspectors and numbers and dates of reports, date of issue of certificate of fulfilment of conditions prior to grant, date of issue of homestead grant and name of party to whom issued, protection order, date of registration, and any further remarks.The register is ordered in an annual and numeric numbering system. In the front of the register is an alphabetical index by the applicants' surnames.Department of Lands circular 12/1935 states that by 31 December 1935 bound registers should be replaced by a card system.
