Gender discrimination in hiring

Gender discrimination remains a pervasive problem in the workplace; however, it is unknown how the genders of the target, perpetrator, and bystander of gender discrimination—and their interactions—influence bystanders’ reactions to witnessing a discriminatory event. In this between-subjects experimental study, 182 participants (51.1% women) were placed in the role of a bystander to a discriminatory hiring scenario depicted via video vignette. The genders of the target and the perpetrator of discrimination were manipulated, and participants’ sexist attitudes and sense of personal power were measured after they watched the video.
