Water-sensitive soils are soils that lose much of their strength and stiffness with the addition of excess moisture. Since such soils will occasionally be used in engineering practices, hydrophobic additives have been manufactured to combat this loss of strength. These additives consist of a hydrophobic wax coating over a binder. This thesis examines the effect of these additives on the properties of very water-sensitive, and less water-sensitive, soils.
