Juxtacrine signalling depends on direct cell-cell contact, so the signalling molecule (ligand) does not travel through an extracellular space and has less time to degrade. As a result, the strength of each paracrine (diffusive) signalling event is assumed to be an order of magnitude (precise value chosen ad hoc) smaller than its juxtacrine (contact-dependent) counterpart.
