VPRS 16149 Register of Licensed Shorthand Writers

This series was created to register individuals who were licensed to record evidence heard during Supreme Court trials.Evidence Act 1890 (No.2) provided for the appointment of examiners of shorthand writers by Governor-in-Council, and shorthand writers to be licensed. Shorthand writers were officers of Court while in performance of duty in taking down and transcribing or causing to be transcribed such evidence.All applicants qualified for license were required to be registered in the manner provided for persons qualified for appointment to the clerical division under the Public Service Act 1890. All persons licensed as shorthand writers were selected from the Register.
