Little information is available about microbial diversity in the semi-arid Caatinga biome of Brazil; therefore, in this study we identified microbial genes associated with biomass conversion in soil and freshwater samples of the Caatinga. Our results showed distinct profiles for carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) in the soil and water samplesOur findings demonstrate the biotechnological potential of the Caatinga as a source of microbes and enzymes that may be useful for biomass conversion to biofuels.
