In an NP + AdvP construction that is asymmetrical in word order cross Chinese and English, “one step forward” corresponding to “向前(forward)一(one)步(step)”, asymmetrical performance is observed between translating it from English to Chinese compared to from Chinese to English by Chinese English learners. This current study then conducts an empirical experiment and statistical analysis based on six NP + AdjP/AdvP constructions of this kind, 1. confirming that Chinese English learners demonstrate much higher correctness rate and confidence in translating such constructions from English to Chinese compared to from Chinese to English and 2. revealing that the adoption of chunk strategy has no muted effect on this translation asymmetry. A model to account for this asymmetric performance is described. Highly relying on semantic trial and error parsing by Chinese English learners is recognized as a contributing factor. These findings highlight the potential for introducing novel parsing methods involving more syntactic processing, thereby enhancing translation levels for Chinese English learners, especially in Chinese-English translation.
