VPRS 19373 Prince Henry's Younger Set Minutes

The purpose of this record series was to document the proceedings of meetings of the Prince Henry's Hospital Younger Set. The inaugural meeting of the foundation branch of the Prince Henry's Hospital Younger Set was held at Prince Henry's Hospital on 28 October 1947. It was resolved at the above meeting that those present form themselves into an organisation to be known as the Foundation Branch of Prince Henry's Younger Set, with the object of raising funds to aid Prince Henry's Hospital. All members and their partners of the recent Debutante Set, which had functioned as the Hospital Ball, were to be eligible for membership. Such other members were to be admitted as were approved by the general meeting. Office bearers were to be elected to hold office for one year. It was agreed that the Executive Committee of eight (8) members be formed at the next meeting.  Fundraising activities included film nights, raffles, gala dances, dinner parties, tennis days, barbeques, balls, theatre nights, house parties, snow and ski trips, picnics, mannequin parades, and Melbourne Cup sweeps. The last meeting of the Prince Henry's Younger Set was held on 14 June 1983. The committee at that time resigned in full and would therefore be unavailable to conduct any further functions on behalf of the Hospital. It was stated that the Younger Set had declined for several reasons: - in recent years the expectations of younger people seemed to have changed. Hotels and professional singles clubs appeared to provide for the social needs of these people - the current membership base of the Younger Set had grown old with the club, which was an impediment to attracting younger members - a lack of a social service attitude among attendees meant that the work fell back on a few people - there had been no help from the hospital, particularly in the area of encouraging hospital personnel to participate in the Younger Set functions.
