VPRS 14543 County Court General Case Files - Original Judgements, Frankston

These papers, retained from County Court files, are the original judgements and orders from those files. They relate to petitions for actions lodged with the court at Frankston. They have been retained as permanent records in accordance with the provisions of PROS 96/08 Records Disposal Schedule for Records of the County Court (Class Reference 3.2.1). The original judgements and orders have been retained as they form the record of judgement in each particular case. The judgements and orders are usually, but not always, written on the outside of the file.Details in the records include the number of the plaint, the dates of hearings, names of the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s), the nature of the action and amount of claim, orders and judgements. The files relate to sittings of the County Court, which was responsible for judgements in more substantial civil actions. The numbers of the plaint are sometimes preceded by an "F" or "O" or "S" prefix.Cases involving a judge or judge and jury were heard in Melbourne. Few cases were registered at Frankston after 1995. In about 1998 the record keeping system changed whereby hard copy files such as these were no longer created. The Court moved to an electronic record keeping system at that time.
