This article is a preliminary phonological description of the dialect spoken in Mottola, a town in northern Salento. The dialect is spoken by approximately 16.000 people and belongs to the High Southern branch of Italian vernaculars. Since it occupies a very marginal position in the High Southern domain it shows remarkable conservative traits, while also apparently exhibiting signs of influence by the dialects of lower Salento.
