We quantified the abundance of microbial cells exiting the GrIS system within the Leverett and Russell glacier catchments from the southwestern area of the GrIS, using quantitative PCR, during the record melting season of 2012. We report on parallel discharge rates and sediment loads, and combine these data to estimate microbial cell export. We additionally determine the microbial diversity at sample points throughout the melt season, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and use multivariate analysis to identify factors affecting the presence and diversity of microbes in the meltwater.
