Disaster Preparedness: Relevance of the Topic from the Perspective of the Population (Germany, June 2024)

The study was conducted by the Institute for Demoscopy Allensbach (https://www.ifd-allensbach.de/) on behalf of RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau within the framework of the project PREP. The aim of the study was to examine how important the topic of disaster preparedness is for the German population. A total of 1,084 persons from the German resident population were interviewed. Interviewers were given quotas specifying how many individuals they had to interview and according to which characteristics these individuals should be selected. The interview assignments and quotas were distributed on the basis of official statistical data across federal states and administrative districts, and further differentiated within these regions by large, medium, and small towns as well as rural municipalities. Additional quotas were applied for gender, age groups, employment status (employed vs. not employed), and occupational groups. The selection was carried out disproportionately between western and eastern federal states: the eastern states were represented with about one quarter of the sample, which is higher than their actual population share of 18 percent. This disproportionality can be corrected by applying the weighting variable. The survey was conducted face-to-face using a standardized questionnaire. Interviewers were instructed to read the questions verbatim and in the original sequence. In total, 316 interviewers, selected and trained according to standardized procedures, participated in the fieldwork. The interviews were conducted between June 1 and June 13, 2024.
