A process for fractionating biomass-based materials has been disclosed. This process involves evaporating a vaporizable portion of the biomass-based material 104 in the short-range evaporator SPE 105， producing a de-pitched hard portion 106 in liquid form and a heavier pitch portion 107 do. The de-pitched light portion 106 may comprise liquid-type de-pitched tall oil， and the heavier pitch portion 107 may include tall oil pitch TOP.
