THE LAMENT OF THE ARAL SEA

This article examines the tragedy of the Aral Sea as one of the most severe anthropogenic environmental disasters of the twentieth century, analyzing its ecological, socio-economic, and cultural consequences. Particular attention is given to the large-scale diversion of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers during the Soviet period, which led to the desiccation of the sea, regional climate change, biodiversity loss, public health crises, and economic decline in Karakalpakstan. The study also explores the literary response to this catastrophe through the poetry of Ibrayim Yusupov, who transformed environmental grief into enduring artistic testimony. His works such as “Aral Elegies,” “Cranes,” and “To the Aral” preserved collective memory and articulated the moral dimension of ecological responsibility. The article further highlights contemporary restoration initiatives led by Shavkat Mirziyoyev, including afforestation of the dried seabed and international advocacy at the United Nations. By integrating ecological analysis with literary interpretation, the article presents the Aral Sea not only as a symbol of environmental collapse, but also as a lesson in accountability, resilience, and sustainable renewal.
