Health literacy screening tools in dermatologic surgery

Supplemental materials from manuscript "Health literacy screening tools to identify patients at risk of misunderstanding wound care instructions after dermatologic surgery."

Supplement 1. The Newest Vital Sign, a validated and widely used measure of health literacy. Scores of 0, 1, 2, or 3 were considered low health literacy while scores ≥4 (out of 6) were considered high health literacy.

Supplement 2. Postoperative questionnaire. Score determined whether participants had low or high understanding of postoperative instructions. Participants needed to answer all 3 questions correctly to be considered as having “high understanding”. Participants were able to consult written instructions, which contained the information needed to answer these questions, while answering the questions.

Supplement 3. Number of questions correct on postoperative questionnaire across different ages. The number within each violin plot is the number of participants who answered the corresponding number of questions correctly. Abbreviations: TN, true negative; FP, false positive; FN, false negative; TP, true positive.
