NRS-1258 | Register of distributors of printed matter coming under the Obscene and Indecent Publications Act 1901

In 1955, the Obscene and Indecent Publications (Amendment) Act (No.10, 1955) required all distributors of printed material in New South Wales to be registered. This Register records details of distributors of printed material as required under section twenty-one of the Obscene and Indecent Publications Act 1901-1955. The Register includes the following details: name and address of publisher, date of registration, file number, and notes. File numbers are for the Colonial Secretary’s correspondence series and some of the files listed in the Register are located in the Correspondence files relating to indecent articles and classified publications (NRS16734; Colonial Secretary special bundle 12/4118–4142). Files are numbered with an annual single number and some entries contain a receipt number for the prescribed fee paid when applying for registration.Included with the Register are separate typescript lists and a short supplementary list published in the New South Wales Government Gazette of distributors of printed material. The list was required to be published each year, including a supplementary list showing all alterations, additions, revisions and removals made in the Register during the previous twelve months.
