Research on Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in Horses

The purpose was to investigate the effects of fecal microbiota transplantation in horses receiving antimicrobial agents. FMT is a promising treatment for horses with acute or chronic diarrhea, but there is no harmonized protocol for equine use. It is generally recommended that antimicrobial administration be discontinued before implementing FMT, but this is a method followed in human medicine and there is no evidence based on the equine research. In this project, Thoroughbred horses were divided into three groups, with or without antimicrobial treatment (metronidazole) and fecal microbiota transplantation, and the changes in gut microbiota in each group were compared.
