KUKAHPÁN-25 model: Central America Seismic Hazard Maps

The KUK-AHPÁN Project updated the seismic hazard maps for Central America, generating maps that integrate new seismic and geological information from the region. The development of the KUKAHPÁN-25 model included important updates in comparison to previous studies. A new database was compiled, homogenized, and consolidated, containing the regional earthquake catalog for Central America from 1520 – 2020, using national data provided by local agencies from the countries involved. The seismic zoning proposed by Alvarado et al. (2017) was also implemented, more accurately defining the depth and dip angle of the subduction zone, as well as the shapes of the upper plate seismic zones in the region based on observed seismic data. Furthermore, region-specific scaling relationships for Central America were employed. The latter were developed from a database comprising 64 earthquakes with rupture parameter information for the region. Finally, ground motion models (GMMs) calibrated for the region were used.
