Data Collection of Adult and Sapling Silver Maple Trees in a Woodlot Region of York University

Researchers collected data on ten randomly selected adult Silver Maple trees and ten saplings of the same species (<em>Acer saccharinum) </em>from the woodlot region in Danby Woods located at York University. The saplings chosen to utilize were the ones that were the closest to the adult tree in the vicinity of the study. Saplings are to be less than or equal to twice the height of the researcher. For each adult tree and sapling, the diameter at breast height (dbh) was determined using transect measuring tapes, this measurement was recorded in centimeters. The distance between the sapling and the adult tree was also determined using transect measuring tapes and this value was recorded in meters. The canopy coverage was determined by making a square with the index finger and thumb of both hands and using that as a quadrat to estimate the percentage that is covered by the tree's foliage.
