The accumulation of anthocyanins is regulated by both transcription activators and repressors. Studies have shown that the bZIP family genes are positive regulators of anthocyanin biosynthesis, but there are few reports of negative regulators. Herein, we report on a bZIP gene of group K in grapevines (Vitis vinifera), VvbZIP36, which acts as a negative regulator of anthocyanin biosynthesis.
