Genotyping-by-sequencing was used to understand genetic diversity in the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) and the chinquapins (Castanea pumila sensu lato). Samples of Castanea alabamensis, a recently rediscovered chinquapin taxon, were analyzed to determine whether C. alabamensis is a hybrid of C. dentata and C. pumila var. pumila.
