This article proposes the exploitation of ohmic drop in the development of novel electrochromic devices. Electrochromic materials enable the construction of more efficient self-powered biosensors incorporating the ability to display information without the involvement of silicon-based electronics. Numerical simulations are employed to describe the behavior of a model system based on the combination of a second-generation biosensor and a Prussian blue-based display. The results show that concentration profiles can be used to model color behavior in electrochromic devices, but more importantly, how iR drop is a critical variable to consider not only in the design, construction, and study of electrochromic devices but also in self-powered electrochemical sensors and power sources in general.
