Commercial lignite-derived humate products for agriculture are promoted as plant growth stimulants and are also claimed to promote beneficial soil bacteria. In an incubation study we investigated the effect of commercial soluble humate granules on soil bacteria. The results suggest altered soil nitrogen-cycling which could contribute to the growth promotion of crops and pasture commonly associated with humate application.
