Buoy data and ERA5 reanalysis data in the Southern Ocean

MetOcean Solutions, in partnership with Spoondrift and the Defence Technology Agency, deployed six wave buoys—including five drifting Spotters—to collect real-time wave data in this remote region [www.metocean.co.nz/southern-ocean]. These buoys are designed to be solar-powered, easy to deploy, and capable of withstanding extreme conditions, providing valuable data regarding wave heights and climate interactions. MetOcean buoy and ERA5 reanalysis data from 2017to 2020, and 2024 encompassing SWH, dewpoint temperature (DPT), 2-meter temperature (2mT), MSLP, sea surface temperature (SST), surface pressure (SP), and surface wind speed (wind), were analyzed in this study.
