Samples were collected at 1m depth or along the whole water column using Niskin bottles and plankton nets, transferred into bins or jars and transported to the laboratory, where the individual size fractions were isolated. For each size fraction, samples were frozen and freeze-dried individually. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values (‰) were determined at the Stable Isotope Facility at the University of california in Davis (USA).
