Harmonised dataset of research grants from national and international funding agencies

2025.06.06 Update We have updated our integrated research projects dataset, now containing nearly 1.9 million records sourced from nine national and international funding agencies. For ease of use, the dataset is split into five CSV files: Projects with start dates before 2010 (309,255 projects) Projects between 2010 and 2015 (518,385 projects) Projects between 2016 and 2020 (511,419 projects) Projects from 2021 onwards (332,396 projects) Projects with unknown start dates (218,916 projects) Data sources include: NIH RePORTER: >1.2 million projects from 2010 National Science Foundation (US): >188,000 projects from 2010 UKRI Gateway to Research: >160,000 (full dataset) Europe PMC: >94,000 projects (full dataset, deduplicated) Swiss National Science Foundation: 62,000 (filtered for completeness) Swedish Research Council: >60,000 (full dataset) European Commission: >51,000 projects (Horizon 2020 & Horizon Europe) NIHR Funding and Awards: >37,000 (full dataset) French National Agency for Research: >23,000 projects from 2010 ______________________________________________________________ This Zenodo entry provides harmonised and integrated datasets of research grants and associated awardees, designed specifically for research funding analyses. It represents one of the most comprehensive openly accessible compilations of research project funding data, primarily covering UK and European sources with substantial international representation. Data harmonisation included: Standardised formats and nomenclature of metadata categories. Handling of missing values and deduplication prioritising completeness (all entries missing both title and abstract were removed). Consistent assignment of country information using the best available method per source. Limitations: Single-institution representation for multi-institutional EPMC grants. Country assignments occasionally inferred from limited direct data. Original currencies retained without conversion. Variable availability of organisational/researcher identifiers. Current focus on agencies from the Global North. Reproducibility and transparency: Included is a Google Colab notebook containing processing code, methodologies, and documented limitations to ensure reproducibility and transparency. Future development plans: Incorporation of additional national and international funding sources. Collaboration with charity partners for charity-specific funding data. Linking with resources such as the Research Organization Registry (ROR) and CrossRef.
