Cinema 1: The Movement-Image, Lecture 16, 27 April 1982

<p><em>The Deleuze Seminars</em> is a collection of audio recordings, transcriptions, and English translations of, and supplemental materials from, the lectures French philosopher Gilles Deleuze gave during his career at the University of Paris 8.</p>

<p>“Cinema 1: The Movement-Image” was a 21-lecture seminar given from November 1981 to June 1982. This seminar marks the first of four consecutive seminars in which Deleuze presents his theory of film. Here, in large part through the philosophy of Henri Bergson, Deleuze rethinks film as a movement-image, as opposed to a succession of still frames or photographic images. Throughout the course he references a wide variety of filmmakers, critics, and philosophers. As a precursor to the publication of Deleuze’s first of two volumes on cinema, <em>Cinema 1: The Movement-Image</em> (<em>Cinéma 1. L'Image-Mouvement</em>, 1983), this seminar is a valuable resource to researchers interested in Deleuze’s film theory, as well as his larger philosophical oeuvre.</p>

<p>In the 27 April 1982 lecture, Deleuze discusses the two forms of the action-image: 1) S-A-S' (situation-action-situation modified; from the situation to the duel), or the large form of the action-image, either spiral (<em>spiralique</em>) or ethical, with consideration of the epic and the western; and 2) A-S-A' (from the index to the situation), or the small form, the elliptical, with consideration of the comedy. Other topics of discussion include: French philosopher and physician Georges Canguilhem and his <em>Knowledge of Life</em> (<em>La Connaissance de la vie</em>); the milieu; encyclopedias; new concepts in Enlightenment (eighteenth century) science; remote action (<em>l'action à distance</em>); the English scientist and natural philosopher Isaac Newton; the intermediary between two bodies; S-A-S' as ethics, the vital breath (<em>le souffle vital</em>) and aesthetics; the line of the universe, vector space, the disappearing of things and the search for the frame; French mathematical philosopher and escaped prisoner of war Albert Lautman; the concept of existence in mathematics; the local and the global; and German mathematician Bernhard Riemann, spaces, and events.</p>

<p>The new version of this dataset includes: the English translation and French transcription in Open Document Text (odt) format, an aggregate version of the audio recordings into a single mp3, and the original Paris-8 French transcription of the recorded lecture. The first version, also available, includes the translation and transcription in pdf and txt format and the audio recording. The aggregate audio file has been downsampled.</p>

<p>Note that this is a truncated session (with part two missing and no recording available), and since the following lecture commences within examination of the “small form”, in chapter 10 of <em>The Movement-Image</em>, what gets lost due to the missing text (and recording) seems to correspond to chapter 11, part 3 (a section titled "The Two Spaces: The breath-Encompasser and the line of the Universe") since Deleuze will refer extensively to this very segment throughout the opening part of session 11, Cinema year 2 (22 February 1983).</p>
