Popularity of sustainable e-commerce packaging in the U.S. 2023

Recycled cardboard is by far the most popular format of sustainable packaging in e-commerce. In 2023, a U.S. survey showed that nearly 62 percent of shoppers supported this category of packaging more other materials like biodegradable packaging peanuts (46.5 percent) or biodegradable plastics and recycled plastics (42 percent). Innovative packaging materials like cornstarch, mushroom, and seaweed packaging are still relatively unpopular, according to the survey.
