DiapriidaeGenusImageDataset

The DiapriidaeGenusImageDataset includes high-resolution images of parasitoid wasps featuring 11 different genera, 10 of which belong to the Diapriidae family and Diapriniiae subfamily and one, the genus Ismarus, from the Ismaridae family. These images were collected as part of the GBOL III project. Specimens were primarily collected in Bavaria, southern Germany, using Malaise traps set in diverse habitats from 2011 onward, covering areas from private gardens to high alpine regions. This dataset includes a separate test dataset for evaluating outlier detection.

Two systems were employed for imaging: an Olympus E-M10 camera with a Novoflex Mitutoyo Plan Apo 5x microscope lens to capture deep-focused images by stacking 70-130 individual shots and a prototype of the Entomoscope for additional captures. All specimens were photographed in ethanol, using lighting, and images were subsequently processed using Helicon Focus.

The dataset contains 2257 color images used to train neural network architectures, facilitating the classification of 11 target groups, and one mixed group labeled "other Hymenoptera," which pools 121 images of species like Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, Chalcidoidea, and non-Diapriniiae Diapriidae. Integrative taxonomy methods combining DNA barcoding and expert morphological analysis were employed for identification, with genetic results cross-referenced on the BOLD platform. This resource facilitates rapid taxonomic identification and contributes to broader biodiversity studies.
