Broken Hill South was one of the largest of the Broken Hill lead-zinc mines and a major member of the Collins House group of companies. During the 1930s it diversified into various other mining activities including a wide scale programme of mineral exploration. The mine itself closed in 1972 with the bulk of its operations being taken over by Conzinc Riotinto Australia, North Broken Hill and Western Mining Corporation.
