资源简介:
In this research, I demonstrate that multi-member districts form a basis for col- laboration between two legislators. I demonstrate that multi-member districts force legislators into similar positions on nonpartisan dimensions of behavior. This simi- larity in secondary dimensions of behavior increases the probability that two legisla- tors will cosponsor legislation together. In order to test this conception, I utilize a natural experiment and an opportunity to observe institutional change in North Car- olina’s elimination of multi-member districts during the 2000-2002 redistricting cycle. Coupled with cross-sectional analysis of several states that use both single member and multi-member districts, empirical evidence strongly corroborates my conception of multi-member districts as a basis for collaboration between representatives.
