Taxonomic and ecological studies of the Antarctic mycological flora. Project_39 2002-2004

The aim of this project is to make a taxonomic analysis of the
mycological flora present in the areas nearby the Argentinean
Antarctic Stations. In addition, relationships between distribution
and the environmental factors occurring in the study areas will be
investigated. In a first instance, systematic samplings will be
carried nearby Jubany Station. There, we will make a "taxonomic
map" of the dominant fungi and we will analyse the seasonal
changes that this distribution pattern shows. In addition, in this
Station and in the others Antarctic points covered during the
icebreaker Ate Irizar cruise, samples from marine sediments, seawater
column, ice from different origins and organic matter will be taken in
order to search for new fungi species. Characterisation will be
carried out by classical and molecular methods. Will be studied,
moreover, the presence in Antarctica of mycotoxin-producing fungi,
which are related with several animal and human diseases and could be
playing an important ecological role causing the disappearance of
species showing high sensitivity to such secondary metabolites.

Resumen del Proyecto: Este proyecto tiene por objetivo general
realizar un estudio taxonomico de los hongos presentes en
Antartida. Conocer su distribucion y relacionar la misma con los
factores fisicos y quimicos a los que estan sometidos en sus
habitats. Se realizaran muestreos sistematicos utilizando como centro
la Base cientifica Jubany. Alli, se realizara un "mapa taxonomico" de
los hongos presentes y se analizara como varia esta distribucion a lo
largo del ano. Ademas, para esta Base y para el resto de los puntos en
Antartida comprendidos en el itinerario del buque Ate. Irizar, se
obtendran muestras de sedimentos marinos, agua de mar a diferentes
profundidades, hielo de diferentes origenes y restos de materia
organica sobre los cuales se hara una busqueda de nuevas especies. La
determinacion se hara no solo por sus caracteristicas morfologicas
sino tambien por metodos moleculares. Se analizara tambien la
presencia en Antartida de hongos productores de micotoxinas, las
cuales se hallan relacionadas con diversas enfermedades animales y
humanas (Marasas y col. 1978, Yeulet y col. 1988) y pueden cumplir un
importante rol ecologico determinando la ausencia de especies
sensibles a estos metabolitos secundarios.
