Slaveholding Patterns among Free Women of Color in New Orleans, 1810-1820

This dataset records 1,584 sales and purchases of enslaved peoples made by free women of color in New Orleans from 1810 to 1820. These transactions were recorded in a notary’s office, where selling and purchasing enslaved people was routine business. This dataset addresses unique slaveholding patterns among this community, inclusive of race, ethnicity, and gender, and evaluates broader considerations in the study of the historical slave trade in New Orleans in the early American period.
