This dataset contains a collection of semi-structured interview transcripts focusing on the historical and contemporary influence of the Javanese Mataram Sultanate on the cultural and linguistic landscape of Kuningan, West Java, Indonesia. As a strategic border region between Sundanese and Javanese cultural spheres, Kuningan serves as a critical site for studying cultural hegemony, linguistic assimilation, and social-political transformation. Key themes covered in these interviews include: Linguistic Hegemony: The integration of Javanese lexical borrowings (e.g., mondok, kagugu) into the Kuningan Sundanese dialect and the historical replacement of the native Kaganga script with the Javanese Hanacaraka. Social Stratification: How the Mataram-Sumedang Larang alliance introduced the undak-usuk basa (speech levels) and a clearer division between the menak (nobility) and cacah (commoners). Agrarian Shifts: The transition from traditional upland farming (ngahuma) to wet-rice cultivation (sawah), which facilitated political patronage and colonial administrative mapping. Symbolic Transformation: The shift in regional symbolism from the Maung (Tiger/Sundanese) to the Turangga (Horse/Javanese) as a reflection of Mataram’s cultural tastes and power. Resistance and Hybridity: Insights into the Sunda Wiwitan community in Cigugur and the Seren Taun ritual as forms of cultural negotiation and "Agama Djawa Sunda" (ADS), which blends Islamic Sufism with Javanese mysticism and Sundanese tradition.
