The Port Phillip Pilots were initially registered by the Harbour Master with the Government taking control of the service from 1853. In 1854 VA 4179 Pilot Board of Victoria was established to oversee the operation of the pilot service , being succeeded by VA 1424 Marine Board in 1887. This agency, in addition to other functions, continues to have oversight of the Port Phillip Pilots Service.This series consists of inwards correspondence of both the Pilot Board and the Marine Board concerned with the operation of the Port Phillip Pilot Service.
