Total genomic DNA was extracted from bentonite clay, Opalinus clay, and crystalline rock and the V4-V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq. Total genomic DNA was additionally extracted from aerobic heterotroph, anaerobic heterotroph, and sulfate reducing bacteria cultures associated with the bentonite clay, and the V4-V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced alongside the clay and rock sample amplicons.
