Open Editors Plus 2026: Editorial Board Composition of 15,000+ Academic Journals

Open Editors Plus v4.0.1 is a comprehensive, openly licensed dataset of editorial board positions across 15,168 academic journals from 48 publishers. It contains 922,097 records covering 744,842 unique editors in 189 countries. Each record is enriched with: Institutional affiliation canonicalized via ROR (Research Organization Registry), with country, city, organization type and geographic coordinates Gender inference from the country-aware World Gender Name Dictionary 2.0 (WGND 2.0), using the ROR-resolved country to disambiguate names, with a 0.75 confidence floor and the gender-guesser library as a tertiary fallback; the weight, sample size and provenance are retained per record Bibliometric indicators (h-index, works count, citations, academic age) from OpenAlex Journal classification (domain, field, subfield, topic) from the journal's own OpenAlex articles, with a Multidisciplinary label from the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, and an impact quartile computed within each field Journal indexing status (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, DOAJ, COPE) Norwegian Publishing Indicator (NPI) level Board-level diversity metrics (gender balance, geographic concentration, institutional diversity) and multi-board indicators, including the published editor_key so the deduplication behind the 744,842 figure is directly reproducible The dataset extends the original Open Editors project (Nishikawa-Pacher, Heck & Schoch, 2023, Research Evaluation 32(2), 228–243) with roughly twice the journal coverage and substantially more enrichment. What changed in v4.0.1. A patch to v4.0.0: ror_city is filled on 5,537 records and ror_state on 5,405 of them, taken from the ROR record of each row's ror_id; v4.0.0 had left them empty. No other value changes, and every count of v4.0.0 stands. data_version is 2026.4. Only analyses at city or state level need re-running. What changed in v4.0.0. Against v3.0.0, journal fields come from each journal's own articles (The Lancet, JAMA, NEJM and The BMJ are Medicine again; Science, Nature and PLOS ONE are Multidisciplinary); oa_impact_quartile is ranked within each field, as documented; 3,483 false ROR matches are repaired; and 152 journals move from retired to current OpenAlex sources. Analyses built on v3.0.0 that use fields, quartiles, institutions or editor counts should be re-run. Full release notes are given under Series information below.
