The Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) was founded in 2000 under the Census of Marine Life. It is now a programme component of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) programme of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.
