To create the datasets, the research team selected variables related to internet adoption and internet-enabled devices from the American Community Survey: Table B28002, Presence and Types of Internet Subscriptions in Household B28002e2, households with broadband of any type: B28002e4, households with broadband of any type (DSL/fiber/cable, satellite, or cellular); B28002e7, households with DSL/fiber/cable broadband; B28002e9, households with satellite broadband; B28002e5, households with cellular broadband B28002e12, households with internet access but no subscription (e.g., city- or university-provided free internet) B28002e13, households with no internet access Tables B28010, Computers in Household, and B28003, Presence of a Computer and Type of Internet Subscription in Household B28003e4, households with any kind of computing device and a broadband subscription (DSL/fiber/cable, satellite, or cellular) B28010e2, households with any kind of computing device: B28010e3, households with a desktop or laptop (but not only a desktop or laptop); B28010e5, households with a smartphone, tablet, or other device (but not only a smartphone/tablet) B28010e7, households with no computing device The hierarchical relationship of variables within these tables shows how the variables relate to each other. For example, B28010e3 and B28010e5 are subsets of B28010e2. The researchers divided each of these values by the total number of households in the tract or zip code tabulation area to create proportions.
